Executive engineer kidnapped, killed in Assam

Guwahati: An engineer of Assam irrigation department was allegedly kidnapped and killed here by his private driver, who had been demanding Rs 25 lakh in the name of ULFA, official sources said Friday.

Executive engineer Manik Baishya was kidnapped from Khanapara here yesterday evening in his official car. Police recovered his body and the abondoned vehcile near Assam Police Radio Organisation at Jalukbari here.

The driver, engaged by Baishya about four months ago, had suspectedly strangulated him to death, the sources said adding

post-mortem showed finger marks of three different persons on his neck.

The police arrested the driver along with his brother and an accomplice from a house in Bonda area and the trio were being interrogated, the sources said.

An extortion note in the name of ULFA demanding Rs 25 lakh was allegedly sent by the driver Baishya, who agreed to pay Rs 15 lakh, the sources said.

Police did not immediately suspect ULFA's involvement in the incident. Investigations are, however, on.
