CM inaugurates Assam Day celebrations at IITF

NEW DELHI, Nov 21 – Wooing investors, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said there is a lot of opportunity for investments in the State. Inaugurating the Assam Day celebrations at the 28th India International Trade Fair 2009, the Chief Minister in a brief address while inviting investments, lamented that Assam has been wrongly projected. In this context, he pointed to increasing number of flights connecting the State with the rest of the country.

“You can see the difference,” he said, adding that the State Government was keen to provide services to the State’s young boys and girls.

State Industries and Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi and State Flood Control Minister Bharat Narah also attended the function. A cultural programme followed the inaugural function.

Meanwhile, Gogoi made a pitch to market the State by pointing to the investment opportunities available in the State. He referred to potential for service sector, handicraft and handloom sectors, among others. He mentioned that the State was rich in natural resources including petroleum, coal, and dolomite, besides the flourishing tea industry.

This year the Assam pavilion’s theme is ‘Export of Services’. The front facade of the pavilion has different props set up to highlight this theme.

Meanwhile, North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) has also participated in the Fair with a contingent of 36 entrepreneurs. This is the seventh consecutive year that NEDFi has participated in IITF. It has nine stalls fromAssam , five from Manipur, three from Mizoram, four each from Sikkim, Meghalaya and Nagaland and three each from Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.

NEDFi has brought in select handicraft and handloom items made with the local materials of various parts of the Northeast. NEDFi is implementing a scheme called Aggressive International Marketing Project from NER, funded by the Ministry of DoNER. Through the project, NEDFi has introduced new designs and new range of materials like water hyacinth and banana fibre.

The main problem faced by the craftsmen of the Northeast is the lack of market. NEDFi brings them in direct contact with more than a million buyers at IITF.

The uniqueness of NEDFi Haat is the representation of Northeast as a single brand. The stalls are mixed to give a heterogeneous display, characteristic of the diversity of Northeast, yet as a single identity, said DGM and Pavilion Director Manoj Kumar Das.
