GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to create awareness about swine flu in the state because a considerable number of people in the state rear pigs and consume pork. The main targets will be those who rear pigs commercially or in their backyards.
On Wednesday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the state's preparedness after WHO issued an alert on the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico and other countries. Senior officials of animal husbandry and veterinary, health, revenue and disaster management departments were present.
Reviewing the state's preparedness to handle the situation in case of an outbreak, Gogoi asked all officials to be on their toes any occurrence of the disease in Assam.
A considerable of number of people in the state rear pigs and consume its meat. The chief minister instructed officials to circulate leaflets and place advertisements in newspapers, radio and television to create awareness.
Swine flu, a highly contagious disease is by the A/H1N virus that mutates rapidly once it enters the body. The disease may have serious repercussions and even prove fatal once it affects any human, health officials said. Officials of the animal husbandry and veterinary departments also apprised the chief minister of the precautionary measures being taken by then. These include directives to managers of pig breeding farms to immediately report to them if they discover any symptoms of conjunctivitis, coughing and severe broncho-pneumonia in animals. They are also providing masks to labourers working in pig breeding farms.
Health officials also assured Gogoi that the department has adequate stock of vaccines to tackle any outbreak of the swine flu. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has also guaranteed the state full support in terms of guidelines, experts, logistics and laboratory facilities.
