Culling of birds begins in new areas of Assam

Guwahati, Dec 28With bird flu notified in seven new locations in Assam, culling has begun afresh in those areas. So far 19 epicentres were officially stated to have affected eight districts of Assam. 
Culling was on in the new areas including Manahkuchi of Hajo, Chayani Barduar block in Kamrup (Rural), Tihu-Barama of Baksa, Chachaligaon Burachowk in Nagaon, Rangamati and Aurpakmoniari Tiniali in Kamrup (Metro).

Meanwhile, culling has been completed in two affected districts of Barpeta and Bongaigaon. Authorities were trying to convince poultry farmers to allow culling in Chirang and Nagaon. 
A compensation of 1.45 crore rupees has so far been paid to poultry owners. So far, over five lakh chicken and ducks have been culled. The H5N1 disease was first detected in Kamrup (Rural) district on the 27th of last month.
