Flood affects 500 villages in Assam

The flood situation all over the state has been critical since the beginning of July as the water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level. The current wave of flood in the past week has left about 400,000 people displaced in over 500 villages in the four districts of Assam. Two children died in the last 24 hours in the district.

Bandh peaceful

Nagaon, Feb 13 : The 12-hour bandh called by the ASDC in Karbi Anglong today in protest against the killing of Parboti Terangpi in police firing, was successful. There was no report of any untoward incident.

Murder case

Sivasagar: The circle officer of Mahmora revenue circle, Prafulla Deori, on Thursday assured a delegation that the murder case of Rintu Gogoi of Moran would be properly investigated and the guilty punished.

Mowed down

Dhubri: Jambu Roy, 58, died on the spot when a truck hit him at Kushiakata near Sidlital on National Highway 31 in Bongaigaon district on Wednesday night.

Inquiry

Dibrugarh: Deputy commissioner Ashutosh Agnihotri on Thursday said an inquiry would be conducted by magistrate Amitav Rajkhowa into allegations of trafficking of human organs, involving a nursing home.

Baby’s body

Dibrugarh: The body of an 18-month-old girl, Arfina Begum, was found in a ditch of her residence in Marwari Patty in Dibrugrah town on Thursday.

Sivasagar bandh

Guwahati, Jan 11 : Three autorickshaws were damaged and window panes of several public buses plying on National Highway 37 broken by activists of the All Assam Tai Ahom Students’ Union during the 12-hour Sivasagar district bandh today.

The student body called the bandh in protest against the death of Harsajyoti Handique, Sivasagar unit president of the union, in police custody on Friday.

Tengapukhuri police arrested Handique on the basis of a complaint by dhaba owner Babul Baruah, a surrendered militant, over a clash with the hotel staff.

Offices and business establishments remained closed and few buses plied.

The officer-in-charge of Tengakhat police outpost, Umesh Chandra Mech, has been suspended. Baruah has been arrested.
