| Dibrugarh, June 2 : One man’s unfinished job is now another man’s top priority. Industries and power minister Pradyut Bordoloi reaffirmed the state’s commitment to complete the ambitious Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymer Limited at Lepetkata in Dibrugarh on time and added that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was personally taking a keen interest in it. Bordoloi’s comments came during a news conference here where he gave a “progress report” of the project, which was earlier being supervised by Bijoy Krishna Handique as the former minister state for chemicals and fertilisers. Handique has now been given charge of the DoNER ministry as well as the ministry of mines. The foundation stone for the Rs 6,000-crore project was laid by Singh on April 9, 2007. Bordoloi said so far work orders and contract worth Rs 1,000 crore have been awa-rded and a comprehensive business plan has been worked out for disbursement of another Rs 1,600 crore within the current fiscal. “The secretary in the ministry of chemical and petrochemicals, Bijay Chatterjee, is scheduled to visit Dibrugarh early this month to review the progress of the construction. The appointment process for a managing director and the director (finance) is also under way and I have come to know that very competent people with a vast experience have applied for the posts. This is quite encouraging for us, as it shows that the project has generated a lot of enthusiasm among the top companies of the country,” the minister said. “Appointment of engineering graduates is also under way and nationwide preliminary examinations have already been held,” he said. On manpower requirement at the project site, the minister said around 2,200 people were currently engaged in various capacities at the work site. The figure, as informed by cracker project authorities, will go up to 7,000 during the peak period of construction, Bordoloi said. Unavailability of skilled workers in the state has become a stumbling block for the contractors engaged in the mega project, a part of the Assam Accord of 1985, the minister said. So far, three batches of unemployed youths, 560 of them, have been sent to the Hyderabad-based National Academy of Construction for training in various fields. Of them, 350 workers have been employed by various contractors at the project site, while around 140 preferred to work outside the state, the minister said. “It has been a matter of concern for us, as contractors said they are unable to find enough skilled manpower in the area. Therefore, we have decided to go all out by providing training to local unemployed youths and we have worked out a detailed plan for that with assistance from Dibrugarh district administration,” he said. According to the plan, 3,000 local youths will be provided training at the Hyderabad academy in various fields like carpentry, painting, fitting, plumbing and masonry within December. “We’ll then send these youth to work after screening and verifying their documents. We have decided to bear the training cost,” Dibrugarh deputy commissioner G.D. Tripathi said. |

Country liquor sale on the rise in Assam
Sale and consumption of country liquor has marked a tremendous rise in Assam since some time. Besides seizing a huge quantity of country liquor, the Excise department has arrested as many as 1431 persons for being involved in illegal country liquor trade in the state in the last two weeks.It needs mention that a good number of persons have also died in the state after consuming spurious liquor.
In this respect, the latest hooch tragedy took place in Dibrugarh. In the last two weeks, the excise department arrested 1423 persons involved in illegal country liquor trade in various parts of the state.
In Guwahati alone, 26,484 litres of country liquor was seized. Likewise, 2,626 cases of illegal country liquor trade have been registered.
But while illegal country liquor trade and drug trafficking has been on the rise, the state excise department is handicapped by shortage of staff.
Presently, the excise department has only 152 inspectors, 150 sub-inspectors and 748 constables to carry out duties at the field level. Further, the state excise act has several shortcomings.
Till these loopholes are properly blocked by bringing in appropriate amendments, it is feared that the excise officials may not be in a position to deliver to their full potential.

St Mary’s win tourney

Dibrugarh, Feb 23 : St Mary’s High School, Naharkatia, defeated Don Bosco High School, Dibrugarh, by seven wickets to clinch the Dibrugarh district (under-17) inter-school cricket tournament title on Saturday at the Dibrugarh District Sports Association outdoor stadium, here.
In the 20-over-a-side match, Don Bosco High School won the toss and decided to bat. The team was however, bowled out for a paltry total of 60 runs in just 15.2 overs. Most of the batsmen lost their wickets because of their own fault. Ramananda Das who was eventually declared the Best Batsman of the tournament stood tall amid the ruins scoring 35.
For St Mary’s, Rajen Sonar who was declared the Man of the Match, picked up four wickets giving away just five runs, while Sunu Sarma claimed three wickets for just six runs.
In reply, St Mary’s got the required runs in just 11.4 overs losing three wickets. Rajdeep Gogoi and Rajen Sonar made 24 runs each.
For Don Bosco, Aman Das who was declared the Best Bowler of the tournament claimed two wickets for 20 runs while Abhishek Pareek claimed one victim.
The prizes were given away by the DDSA president, Munindra Nath Saikia, the District Sports Officer, Jagat Chandra Gogoi and the donors of the trophies, Doly Das and Hitesh Das.
The tournament was organised by the Dibrugarh District Sports Office with assistance from the DDSA. Nineteen school teams from the entire district had participated in this year’s meet.

Bird culling drive in Dibrugarh over
DIBRUGARH, Dec 28 – The bird culling drive carried out by 25 Rapid Response Teams (RRT) in Dibrugarh is over and at least 15606 birds, including ducks, were culled during the drive, informed District Veterinary Officer Dr Manik Das.
Dr Das said that over Rs 6 lakh was spent to compensate the farmers whose birds were killed. Barring ward 21 and 22 of the Dibrugarh Municipality which did not fall within the three kilometre radius from the bird flu detected location, the rapid response teams moved to all the remaining 20 wards for culling, the officer said.
Culling of birds was ordered in Dibrugarh following detection of the disease in one of the poultry farms in Chiring Chapori here. The culling started on December 12. Raising of birds and ducks in the 20 wards of the municipality will now remain suspended for at least three months. However, random collection of blood samples of birds, visits to poultry farms and sanitation drive in the farms within a radius of 10 kilometre distance will be conducted once in every fortnight as part of its post surveillance operation, Veterinary Department told this Correspondent.
