4 killed in fresh Assam violence

Guwahati, Aug 6 : At least four people were killed in fresh violence in lower Assam's Kokrajhar region, taking the death toll in ethnic violence since July to 75 so far.

Police said four bodies were recovered from Kokrajhar and Chirang districts Sunday after over a week's peace.

Two people were killed in each district.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday had said the situation in the violence-hit parts of the state has improved.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram after visiting the affected areas had also urged people to return to homes from camps and had assured their safety.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also visited the areas.

Assam witnessed ethnic clashes between the tribal Bodos and the Muslims in recent days.

More than four lakh people were staying in 278 relief camps set up by the government in the state.

The PM had announced relief packages for the victims.
