The Gauhati High Court on Thursday rejected an interim bail petition
filed by Gaurav Jyoti Neog, the TV reporter accused of orchestrating the
molestation of a woman in the streets of Guwahati on July 9.
Justice CR Sarma, while rejecting Neog’s interim bail petition,
directed the police to submit the court the case diary relating to the
incident that was with the Bhangagarh police station here. Neog, the
NewsLive reporter who had extensively shot the molestation and assault
of the woman by a group of people for about 45 minutes, has already
resigned from his channel. NewsLive editor-in-chief Atanu Bhuyan too has
quit, complaining that he was afraid there would be no fair probe
especially Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made some remarks about his
reporter.
Senior Congress legislator Amiya Gogoi on Thursday stated on the
floor of the state assembly here that women and girls should be careful
in choosing what to wear, especially in public places so that they do
not invite trouble.
“I would also blame the guardians and parents. I often see girls
moving around in short skirts and pants. This is not good,” the
legislator said outside the House.
A group of NGOs and women’s rights groups asked the Assam CM to
take steps to sensitise the state police on gender issues. “The police
need to be sensitised on issues of gender so that they are able to
handle (such) cases effectively,” a delegation of the NGOs said.
