Following Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's instructions,who is currently in USA tour, a high level team of Assam Government headed by Revenue Minister Dr. Bhumidhar Barman and Health Minister Dr.Himanta Biswa Sharma alongwith state chief secretary Naba Kumar Das, Principal Secretary (Home) Subhash Chandra Das and Director General Of Police
Shankar Barua visited disputed Langpi area on Assam-Meghalaya border on Saturday to take stock of the situation. It is worth mentioning to note that on Friday last, two persons were killed in police firing and more than 20 injured in an armed clash between Khasi and Nepali communities at the weekly market of Langpi area. Both Assam and Meghalaya stake claim to the village which is on the border of Kamrup and West Khasi Hills districts of the two states respectively.
Official sources today informed that the situation in the area is under control but still tension prevails.
Talking to this scribe, Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman informed that on Friday after the incident occurred, he had a conversation with the Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma over telephone and stressed on the need to sort-out the dispute over Langpi area. Dr Barman also informed that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi soon after his arrival from USA tour, will have a discussion with his Meghalaya counterpart.
Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma said that within a day or two Chief Secretaries of both the states will have a talk on the ongoing dispute over Langpi and the fresh incident and accordingly a probe will be ordered. Mentionably, a joint committee had earlier been formed with Dr. Sarma and Meghalaya Minister Prestone Tyngsong at its head to resolve the dispute.
