Guwahati, Feb. 14: Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today laid the foundation stone of a hotel management institute at Murmuria in Assam’s Jorhat district.
The Rs 12-crore institute, on the Jorhat-Mokokchung Road, will be the first such government-run hospitality institute in the Northeast catering to the needs of the students from the entire region.
“The hospitality industry is growing and as such we need institutes which will groom our students. As soon as this institute starts functioning, our students need not go to Delhi or other metropolitan cities to pursue courses related to hospitality industry,” Gogoi said at the ceremony.
Official sources said while Rs 8 crore would be spent on construction of building, Rs 4 crore would be split into half to build the hostel and buy equipment.
The institute will offer altogether 260 seats covering different courses — BSc in hospitality and hotel administration, post-graduate diploma in accommodation, operation and management, trade diploma course in food and beverage science, trade diploma course in food production, bakery and confectionery and trade diploma in housekeeping and front office.
The total area of the institute will be 60,000 square feet and 78,200 square feet will be a residential area.
The chief minister said the state government had been laying stress on development of education in the state. “We want to give better education facilities to our children.”
Gogoi also said Jorhat would be transformed into a major tourist destination in the region and efforts were on towards that end. “With Majuli, Kaziranga and Sivasagar all close to Jorhat, this town could turn into an epicentre for tourists,” Gogoi, who hails from Jorhat, said.
At another function held at Lachit Borphukan Maidam at Holongapara village in Jorhat district’s Lahdoigarh, the chief minister announced that a national award would be introduced from this year in memory of the great Ahom general.
Gogoi also laid the foundation stone of a Rs 19-lakh auditorium at Lachit Maidam today.
A gate will also be installed at the intersection of NH-37 and the approach road to Lachit Maidam, where art and sculptures depicting the great Saraighat War would be inscribed.
He said a bronze statue of Lachit Borphukan would also be erected in the middle of the Brahmaputra near Guwahati very soon.
