Guwahati, Feb. 18 : Educationists today expressed reservations about the bill to ban corporal punishment in schools, barely two days after Dispur finalised it, warning that such a move could boomerang.
The abolition of corporal punishment will give rise to indiscipline among the students and demotivate the teachers, the teachers warned.
According to the principal of Cotton College, Indra Kumar Bhattacharyya, the fear of punishment is important to make the students disciplined and study well.
“Rebuking or giving them two slaps if the students do not behave properly or study well is not unfair. I feel that the government must take a pragmatic and sensible approach to prevent extreme incidents like physical torture or mental abuse of students. A total abolition of corporal punishment will cause indiscipline among the students and they will take their teachers for granted,” Bhattacharyya said.
The principal of Don Bosco School, Fr Joseph Thelekkat, seconded his views.
“There has to be a system in force to control the students from being unruly. Asking the students to apologise for their mistakes or misbehaviour must not be seen or considered a corporal punishment.
“I had seen that a teacher even touching a student in a country like the US is considered an abuse. We have also noticed the rise in incidents of violence committed by students in the US. Such violence might be attributed to extreme freedom given to them.”
A teacher of a vernacular medium school said: “My school gives admission to students from various backgrounds. Many illiterate parents send their sons and daughters to my school with the hope that they will become well-behaved and good in their studies. So the teachers have a responsibility and this necessitates them to take some actions against unruly students.
“The introduction of the proposed legislation would demotivate many teachers and give immense freedom to the students to become unruly.”
Dispur finalised the Assam Corporal Punishment in Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill, 2010, on Monday.
