Guwahati, Sept. 14: The October 30 serial blasts of 2008 have returned to centrestage with the CBI today starting investigations into a text message, purportedly sent by the Indian Security Force-Indian Mujahideen (ISF-IM), claiming responsibility a day after nine explosions rocked the state.
Sources in the CBI said the agency was interrogating those suspected to have been involved in sending the text message. “The government had asked the CBI to probe the case as it could be related to the blasts,” a source said.
The government had handed over the case to the investigating agency a couple of months ago. The CBI had also investigated the nine cases of blasts and filed the relevant chargesheets.
Though the ISF-IM, a little known outfit, had claimed responsibility, subsequent investigations had found the Ranjan Daimary faction of the NDFB guilty. Daimary himself is the prime accused in the chargesheet filed by the CBI. The cases are being currently tried.
The source said mobile service providers and some others have been called in for interrogation. “We should be able to get to the truth,” he said.
He, however, said prima facie it appeared to be a “prank”. “But then, it could also be possible that some attempt had been made deliberately to throw the then nascent investigations off-track,” he said.
“It is, therefore, necessary to establish who had sent the text and with what motive.”
In its text message sent to a television channel, the outfit had written: “We, ISF-IM, take the responsibility of yesterday’s blast. We warn all of Assam and India for situation like this in future. We thank all our holy members and partners. Ameen (sic)”.
Security forces traced the message to Moirabari in Nagaon district registered in the name of Nazir Ahmed. Nazir was subsequently arrested but later released on bail.
The outfit was formed in 2000 in the Bodo-dominated areas to “counter” the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) and NDFB which had launched a violent campaign against minorities in the area.
