Guwahati, Aug 15 : A major disaster was averted on the eve of Independence Day with the seizure of seven powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from the city and another from Bongaigaon district today, police said.
In stepped up search operations following intelligence reports of attempts by militant outfits to disrupt the celebrations, police seized the IEDs from a house along the Meghalaya hills bordering the city and picked up some persons in this connection.
The search operation was initiated following interrogation of an apprehended ULFA cadre, Mintu Rabha, who had revealed that some militants have sneaked into the city to carry out blasts to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
Another IED, weighing nearly seven kgs, was spotted under a bridge in Lower Assam's Bongaigaon district by a youth who informed the police. It was later defused by the army.
