Guwahati, July 29 (PTI) The Assam government today announced steps to combat drought conditions prevailing in the state due to scanty rainfall.
"With an effort to decentralise the grant of funds, deputy commissioners have been asked to produce area specific action plans to help the farmers whose crops have been affected by drought this year," Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here.
He said a council would be formed of affected farmers to outline the immediate measures needed to mitigate their suffering and enhance crop production.
The agriculture department will provide free diesel and seeds for rabi crops to the farmers, Gogoi said.
The state has received only 550.40 mm of rainfall since June one till yesterday compared to the normal 800.40 mm during the period - a deficit of 31 per cent, he said.
The severely affected districts are Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Barpeta, Darrang besides southern Assam's Barak valley.
