Chief held, Black Widow declares ‘ceasefire’

Guwahati: Two days after its chairman Jewel Gorlosa was arrested in Bangalore, the Jewel faction of Dima Halam Daoga (DHD-J), known as Black Widow, on Saturday announced a unilateral “ceasefire”, and pleaded for a similar response from the Government.

The DHD(J) sent a letter to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announcing its unilateral ceasefire as also its willingness to sit for talks with the government. The ceasefire would be effective from Sunday, the letter said, a local TV channel quoting David Dimasa, DHD(J) Northern region commander said here.

Meanwhile, a Chief Judicial Magistrate here granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) 14 days custody of Gorlosa. The Black Widow chief was arrested on Thursday in Bangalore after the outfit carried out a series of violent acts that had brought governance and rule of law to a standstill in the North Cachar Hills district of Assam over the past three months.

The court also sent North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council chief executive member Mohet Hojai to ten days custody of the NIA on Saturday. Hojai was arrested on May 30 at Haflong on allegations that he had provided a sum of Rs 1 crore to the DHD(J) for purchasing arms and ammunition.
