Silchar April 24 : Barely days after Dispur indicated that a ceasefire with the DHD (J) was on its mind and could even be declared after the elections, the outfit struck again, killing two security personnel and injuring nine others, including an army officer, in three separate incidents since last night.
Two civilians were also injured in the attacks.
In the first incident, a jawan was killed and two others, including an army officer, sustained serious injuries in an encounter with a dozen suspected DHD (J) militants in North Cachar Hills district last night. The rebels pummelled a police outpost at Langting township, about 120km from the district headquarters town of Haflong.
The militants later sneaked into thick forests under cover of darkness.
After raining bullets on the police outpost, they stormed a nearby market, prompting the policemen to open fire, official sources said today. Sources said an army unit of the Artillery Field Regiment rushed to the site and engaged the militants in a gunbattle.
Sanjay Singh was killed while Mahinder Singh, another jawan, and Lt Col Rajesh Shukla were injured in the exchange of fire.
Police in Haflong today said guerrillas lay in wait on a hillock at Wadrengdisa township this morning and sprayed a volley of bullets on a jeep carrying Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel.
SSB inspector Bhupal Singh died on the spot and SSB drivers Kala Singh and Henri Singh received bullet wounds. They are being brought to the civil hospital in Haflong. Lalita Haflongbar and Dinesh Khersa, two civilians travelling in the jeep, also sustained bullet injuries.
In Lower Haflong, militants attacked an Assam Rifles patrol party, leaving five jawans injured, deputy commissioner, S. Jagannathan said.
Sources attributed the spurt in militancy to the election process under way.
The attack is suspected to be in retaliation to the killing of Rajat Langthasa, 25, a self-styled junior commissioned officer of the DHD (J) who was killed yesterday in an encounter with the army when the patrolling unit of the 97 battalion of the J&K Rifles was attacked by a band of rebels at Nablaidisa village under Maibong block, around 70km from Haflong.
Rajat, a Dimasa tribal, had deserted the Dilip Nunisa-led DHD. He was a resident of Jirighat in Cachar district.
