Dibrugarh, March 2 : Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today laid the foundation stone of the renovation project of the formalin unit II of the Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) at Namrup in Dibrugarh district.
The renovation, which is to be completed within three months of commencement, will cost around Rs 4.17 crore.
“Namrup, as we all know, had always been known for its various industrial units like the APL, Namrup Thermal Power Station (NTPS), the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL) and so on, apart from the various oil and gas installations. It was an ideal industrial township with natural resources in abundance in its surroundings. However, over time these units have lost some of their sheen. Therefore, our government has decided to go for an overhaul,” Gogoi said while addressing a public gathering at the Bihutoli ground.
At present, the formalin unit has a capacity of producing 100 tonnes per day. The finished product — adhesive — is largely used in the plywood industries. After the renovation, the unit will be able to yield an additional 25 tonnes of finished products everyday.
After the foundation stone-laying ceremony at the APL, the chief minister laid the foundation stone of the Rs 700-crore replacement project of the NTPS. “With this we will be able to enhance the power generation of the NTPS from 70MW to 104MW. We are replacing most of the existing machinery with the latest and sophisticated ones and which will last for a longer period,” industries and power minister Pradyut Bordoloi said.
He said the government had planned a massive overhaul of the state’s power sector with assistance from the centre and agencies like the Asian Development Bank.
“Along with the revamp of the NTPS and the APL, we will also concentrate on the BVFCL which is doing quite well after its bifurcation. We have also decided to move ahead with the Namrup-IV unit of the BVFCL and we are in consultation with the Centre for this,” Bordoloi said. The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Pranati Phukon, who represents Naharkatia constituency, was also present at the function today.
