Shillong, March 16: The five deserters of the NCP-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government on Monday failed to turn up on the inaugural day of the budget session of the Assembly, sending worrying signals within the government.
The MPA had lost its majority after two Independents and the lone MLA from Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) pulled out March 9.
That was followed by the resignation of health minister and HSPDP MLA Advisor Pariong from the Donkupar Roy ministry on March 11.
Pariong had gone missing since then. A day later, deputy speaker and NCP MLA Sanbor Shullai also disappeared. The Assembly Speaker BM Lanong has served notices to all the deserters under the Anti-Defection Law.

Referring to the importance of internal security in view of the recent terror strikes in Assam and other parts of the country, he said, The construction of the border fence needs to be expedited in order to check influx and improve security in border areas.
