Declare Majuli as Vaishnavite centre: Togadia

GUWAHATI, March 8 – Majuli, the cultural heartland of Assam, should be declared a holy Vaishnavite centre, and declared off limits to all proselytising efforts by non-Hindus. The Government of Assam should take steps to conserve the cultural and spiritual heritage of Assam, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad has stated.

Addressing the media in the city today, VHP leader Praveen Togadia, reasoned that such a step has already been taken in the area where the Tirupati and Tirumala shrines are located in Andhra Pradesh. The State Government there, a Congress government, has made the arrangements, and hence the same needs to be done in Assam, he asserted.

Giving such a recognition, he argued, would ensure that activities like conversion do not take place in Majuli, and its age old culture and traditions are conserved for posterity.

Criticising the State Government for being soft on Bangladeshi migrants in Assam, he said that it was important that Satra lands under their illegal occupation be restored to the rightful owners.

The VHP, he noted, was aware of large-scale encroachment also taking place in forests and tribal lands in Assam. The organisation expressing concern over the situation, urged the Government to free such lands from illegal occupation immediately.
