Guwahati, March 5 : Assam Police emerged champions in the three-day 34th senior inter-district athletics championship that concluded at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium here today. The police outfit bagged 14 gold, three silver and as many bronze medals to be eventually adjudged the Best Team. NF Railway Sports Association finished runners-up with a tally of eight gold, two silver and a bronze while Nagaon finished third with four gold, four silver and a bronze medal. Pabitra Medhi and Dipti Chutia of Assam Police were adjudged the Best Man and Women athletes respectively in the meet organised by the Guwahati Sports Association under the banner of the Assam Athletic Association. In the Ranjit Gogoi Memorial Prize-money Marathon, organised as part of the championship, Abdul Barek of NF Railway and Matuara Ahmed of Barpeta emerged winners in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Barek clocked 2:06:05 hours to run the 41km track. Saiful Ali of Barpeta with a timing of 2:36:27 hour took the silver while Somesh Uddin of Guwahati clocking 2:37.51 hours claimed the bronze medal. In the women’s half-marathon, Matuara Ahmed clocked 1:36:31 hours. She was followed by Sahida Khannum of Barpeta clocking 1:36:45 hours for the silver medal and Mina Bordoloi of Morigaon in 1:40:52 hours for the bronze. Altogether 30 men and 12 women participated in the marathon run. Altogether 163 athletes from 17 districts participated in the athletic meet. |
