An eye for the unique

art
A painting at the exhibition
A year has passed since the first exhibition of paintings and sculpture at the State Art Gallery in Guwahati by the faculty of the fine arts department of Assam University, Silchar, earned rave reviews from art lovers.
The themes were no less original and the use of colours no less arresting at the second such exhibition, held from February 2 to 7 at the same venue.
The exhibition displayed the works of a forum called Double Eye, comprising 11 students of the university’s fine arts department.
Subir Paul’s huge six feet by four feet acrylic, Daily Life (2), depicts human beings going about various activities.
The collage is designed to create an effect of electronic space. The attire and features of the figures are distinctly tribal, reflecting Paul’s sensitive vision and mature sense of expression.
Kanak Kanti Saha’s acrylic, Top View, was another unique endeavour, portraying a painter with a sketchbook on his lap, musing before a canvas.
The sketchbook shows bright objects in various colours, contrasting with the faded creations on the canvas.
Chirojyoti Bhattacharjee puts together six layouts, expressing the diversity and sensitivity of his emotions.
The primary elements and the basic colour of all the six layouts are the same.
However, the artist has endeavoured to create a different essence with different arrangements and the addition of new elements to each.
Another work, Bondage, is a celebration of red colour and deserves special mention for the strength of its content and sensitive treatment.
Jasadeep Kar’s acrylic, Family Culture, depicts the artist’s skill at including the various activities of several members of a family in a single frame and shows a rare gift for articulation.
Of the sculptures displayed in the show, the untitled figurine in wood by Rajib Kumar Das caught the connoisseur’s eye.
With superb craftsmanship, the artist has prominently displayed the finer designs of the metallic ornaments on the figure.
Two other works in wood, Binoy Paul’s replica of an LPG cylinder and Rahul Dev Rabha’s human figure, also were quite impressive.
