‘Unresponsive’ Dhoni finds himself left out

GUWAHATI, Jan 11 : The East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy were announced here today with S Das of Orissa being designated captain. Well-informed sources said Mahendra Singh Dhoni had not been considered for selection as he did not say if he was available.

"He was written to," said the sources, insisting on anonymity, "but he didn't write back, leaving selectors to arrive at the conclusion that he wasn't interested."

The team will play their first match against West Zone in Mumbai from 29 January. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Debashish Mohanty were not included.

The Assam Cricket Association's secretary, Mr Bikas Barua, announcing the names of the players, said RR Parida would be the contingent's vice-captain.

The others to have been chosen are: Dhritiman Saha, Manoj Tewari, Ashok Dinda, Ranadeb Bose, D Chakrabarty (Bengal), Niranjan Behera, Basant Mohanti, H N Das (Orissa), Anant Katti, Krishna Das (Assam), Saurav Tewari (Jharkhand), Jayanta Debnath and Tushar Saha (Tripura). The team's manager will be Mr Nagesh Singh (Assam) and Mr Utpal Chatterjee (Bengal) will be their coach.

The squad will report to the Tripura Cricket Association on 25 January.
