Shillong : An officer-in-charge of Nongstoin police station, the district headquarter of West Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya was attacked by an angry mob on Tuesday night.
The police officer identified as one BK Mishra was accused of demanding money from truckers passing through National Highway-44E. When a truck driver refused to pay up the extortion sum the police officer assaulted him, witnesses claimed. The assault of the driver triggered a violent reaction from the public who together joined large number of drivers and chased the OC to his police station.
The residents and truckers gheraoed the police station and attacked and assaulted the OC critically. The police officer after the assault has been rushed to Guwahati in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, DIG DK Rapthap rushed to Nongstoin from Shillong to assess the situation and investigate the incident.
