Bihu festivities remove shadow of violence in Assam

Guwahati : All round Bihu festivities, community fishing and merriment have since this morning considerably removed the long shadow of violence over Assam as ordinary people have come out in full force to celebrate the occasion.

Tonight is Uruka while tomorrow is the full Bihu. Tonight is the community fest and since early morning not less than 40,000 people have thronged the river beach of Uzanbazar of Guwahati alone to buy fish as transaction has gone over Rs 50 lakh in one market.

Guwahatians were in full force determined to jerk off the trauma of continuous bomb blasts since October 30. So far seven bombs went off in the past two months beside half a dozen encounters leaving more than 45 dead.

‘’We are determined to celebrate come what may’’ said Baikuntha Pathak, an octagerian school teacher proudly displaying a big fish he picked up from the market. Elsewhere in the whole of Brahamputra valley it is the same story as community fishing, which were reported from Kaziranga, Manas, Goronga and Pobitopra.
Fishing for once a year inside the national parks are legal in Assam and it is celebrated with great gaiety and festivity.

Both, Governor Shivraj Matthur and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have greeted the people while legislators rushed to the constituencies after fulfilling the Assembly obligations last night.
